About Valar Atomics
Valar Atomics builds nuclear reactors the way technology companies build products: standardized, factory-made, and produced at scale.
Founded in 2023 in El Segundo, California, it is led by founder and CEO Isaiah Taylor, who took Valar from stealth to a live reactor and first electricity in under three years. The team of about 125 is drawn from the national labs and other serious nuclear programs, including Chief Nuclear Officer Mark Mitchell, who spent 25 years building advanced reactors and once ran one of the first American companies in the field.
Taylor’s story is worth knowing. Born in 1999, he grew up poor, moved 14 times before he was 16, dropped out of high school to write code, and married his childhood sweetheart at 19. He founded Valar at 24, the same age his great-grandfather, physicist Ward Schaap, joined the Manhattan Project. Schaap worked at Oak Ridge, the secret city built to enrich uranium for the bomb, where Taylor’s grandmother was born in the base hospital. Taylor named Valar’s reactors after him. The first commercial unit, Ward One, is due to start generating in Utah this year.
Valar designs, builds, fuels, owns, and operates its own reactors, then sells the output directly to customers. Its high-temperature gas reactors run on TRISO fuel and helium cooling, and produce heat above 900 degrees Celsius, roughly three times hotter than a conventional plant.
That heat is the whole point: it can be sold as electricity, industrial process heat, clean hydrogen, or drop-in synthetic fuels like diesel and jet. Rather than one giant plant per project, Valar clusters hundreds of identical modules on a single campus it calls a gigasite, so the economics look more like a factory than a one-off megaproject.
The company has raised close to $1.5 billion in under two years. The most recent round is a $1 billion Series B led by Sequoia Capital at a reported $6 billion valuation. Anduril founder Palmer Luckey led an earlier round himself. From launch to a $6 billion valuation in eighteen months.
CEO Isaiah Taylor joins “Bloomberg Tech” to discuss Series B and future plans.
The Opportunity
The grid cannot keep up with what AI and reindustrialization are about to demand. The company points to a $100 billion-plus US power shortfall, with hyperscalers alone short more than 200 terawatt-hours a year by 2030. The bottleneck is not generation, it is the queue: connecting new power to the grid can mean a multi-year wait plus a long-term utility contract. Valar skips the grid entirely. Put the reactor next to the customer, behind the meter, and that wait disappears.
Because the reactor runs so hot, Valar can sell more than electricity: firm power for data centers, high-temperature heat for heavy industry, clean hydrogen, and drop-in synthetic fuels. Power is the way in, the demand that exists right now, and the heat, hydrogen, and fuel markets, north of $1 trillion by 2035, stack on top. And the demand is not theoretical. In July 2026, Valar powered an Nvidia Blackwell chip directly off its reactor and announced a 30 megawatt waterless AI factory with Nvidia. The biggest name in AI compute is already running on this model.

Why It’s Working
Real hardware, on a timeline the industry cannot match. Valar went from groundbreaking to critical reactor about 15x faster than the industry’s modern track record.
September 2025: groundbreaking
June 2026: a critical reactor
July 2026: first electricity
That made Valar the first company to build and run a DOE-authorized reactor entirely outside a national laboratory, which Energy Secretary Chris Wright called a revolutionary moment for American nuclear. Most reactors take a decade. Valar got there in under a year.
Government authorization as a moat. Valar was selected for the Department of Energy’s Reactor Pilot Program, a short list of developers given a faster path from prototype to operating reactor. Our portfolio company Aalo Atomics made the same list, so the government is backing this model from more than one direction. Valar also works with the national labs and the State of Utah, now building itself into a nuclear hub around Valar’s site.
It controls its own fuel. These reactors run on a fuel called TRISO: tiny uranium kernels wrapped in ceramic, engineered so they cannot melt down. It is the one input the whole industry is short on. Valar is building its own TRISO supply in Utah with proven German technology, so it is not waiting in line behind everyone else. That is both a speed and a cost advantage most developers do not have.
Built for defense. Valar’s reactors are designed to go where the grid does not: military bases, remote installations, forward positions. The company already works with the Department of Defense, and proved the point by airlifting a full reactor across the country on three US Air Force C-17s. The cap table backs the thesis, with Anduril’s Palmer Luckey, Palantir CTO Shyam Sankar, and Lockheed-affiliated investors all in.

Why We’re Interested (LFG POV)
Valar Atomics is one of those rare companies that sits at the intersection of nearly every thesis we hold: energy and nuclear, reindustrialization, AI infrastructure, and defense. Most deals touch one. This one touches all four.
We already hold Aalo in this category, and that is the point. We do not make a single bet in a category and hope it runs, we own the top one to three names. Factory-built nuclear is too big and too early to call with one name, and Valar is the other name we need. Aalo and Valar are the two horses we want in that race.
The macro is simple. AI is eating electricity faster than the grid can deliver it, and America is rebuilding its industrial base at the same time. Both need enormous amounts of firm, clean, always-on power, right where the work happens. Valar is building the picks and shovels for that shift. The field is consolidating around a few serious names, and Valar is reaching a live reactor faster than almost anyone while owning its own fuel.
